An heirloom melon variety from Turkey, Akbal is commonly grown in Northwest Peninsula, Gönen and Bandırma. Fruits have white rind with green stripes and salmon-color flesh with excellent, very sweet flavor. Fruits usually weigh in the 6-10 lb range. Yield is 6-8 ton/acre.
Our current seed stock was grown by Hank Keogh and Jo Erikson of Avoca Seed in Corvallis, OR. Avoca Seed is certified organic by Oregon Tilth. Photos by Hank Keogh.
