80 days. Romaine lettuce with not very tight heads. Long and wide, crunchy leaves have light green color. Excellent flavor when grown in cool season as this variety doesn’t tolerate warm temperatures well. Such a great choice for salads.
Yedikule lettuce is known to be grown for over 1,500 years in the historical bostans (produce gardens) along the wall of Istanbul Citadel since the Byzantine times. These historical gardens were threatened by the current Turkish government for years and almost fell victim to gentrification until the political shift in local elections. Continuity of Yedikule 5701 is dependent on the survival of these gardens.
We are a seed company that focuses on preservation of Turkey’s traditional seeds by producing these seeds to offer them in our catalog. You can also help our preservation efforts by saving seeds from the varieties such as Yedikule 5701 romaine lettuce you find in our catalog.
Our current seed stock was grown by Hank Keogh and Jo Erikson of Avoca Seed in Corvallis, OR. Avoca Seed is certified organic by Oregon Tilth. Photos by Hank Keogh and Mehmet Öztan.
