Surme is a very old heirloom from Diyarbakir, Turkey. This variety was once very well known all over Turkey as well as internationally because of its refined taste, crunchy flesh and large fruit size. Once a staple commercial variety, these days, Surme can hardly be found at grocery stores in big cities of Turkey. Every year, a traditional “largest watermelon” competition is held in Diyarbakir to help the variety survive. Fruits of Surme can weigh as much as 150 lbs. Very sweet and delicious.
