Sultani is a staple pea variety in Turkey. Flat pods are stringless and taste best when picked young. However, this variety is typically grown for its seeds which can be harvested in two ways: 1) When the pods are still green like a shelling pea, 2) When the pods are dry and crunchy at the end of the season.
We prefer harvesting the seeds when the pea pods are still green and leathery since this way seeds can also be used in salads. A very productive pea that needs trellising but also doesn’t have very long vines and grows like a half-runner bean.
Our current seed stock was grown by Lindsay Klaunig of Trouvaille Farm in Ohio.

- Growing tips: Soak seeds in water overnight. Direct-seed in early spring and late summer in compost rich soil with good drainage. Feed soil with Phosphorus and Potassium-rich fertilizer and avoid excess Nitrogen as this can encourage lush leaf coverage but discourage pod production. Trellis to keep the vines off of the ground for better yield and maintenance. Pick frequently to encourage production. Peas are self-pollinating plants but it is good practice to isolate by 25-50 ft between varieties.
