Description

Beautiful mid-season, purple striped, hard-neck garlic variety that was brought to the Unites States from Uzbekistan by John Swenson. Relatively mild yet full flavor of Samarkand makes her a great choice for cooking. Great storage capacity under ideal conditions. 7-10 cloves per bulb.

After we listed this garlic with the name Persian Star to our catalog, John Swenson emailed me to note that he bought the garlic in Samarkand in 1989, and the variety’s name is in fact Samarkand. Hence, we converted name back to Samarkand to honor the place and people the garlic came from.

Our seed stock has been stewarded and was organically grown by Tasha Guatney of Akwesasne.

Yes it will. In warmer climates, plant November-December when soil temperature is below 60F. I don’t like to see leaves pop through soil until spring to promote plant vigor, so I plant later and/or mulch heavier in fall (after usually warm winters I remove some mulch so leaves can emerge). USDA lists your location as 7a. I grew in same but arid summers and planted first week in November.

Here’s some garlic info from Univ. Georgia https://extension.uga.edu/publications/detail.html?number=C854

I can’t say how these produce since I will be planting them soon for next year’s garlic, but the bulbs that arrived are in great condition with large cloves. But, if they are anything like the other seeds I have purchased from Two Seeds in a Pod, I except they will be outstanding.

I have not planted it yet, but it arrived in excellent condition. I have planted this before, and it did not do very well here in WNC. However, I am hoping that this will be great.

All of the cloves have come up. I planted a side crop of winter wheat. I hope they love each other!

Product quality was great. Our soil and weather didn’t help the final result. Will buy again from Two Seeds in a Pod.
