Mid-late season. Legendary traditional melon of Western Turkey and one of the two melons that give the Kırkağaç-type melons their categorical name.
Long, ribbed fruits of Kırkağaç 589 have golden rind and dark green/black mottled pattern. White, meaty flesh is very juicy, sweet and fragrant. Fruits usually weigh in the range of 5-7 lbs.
So-called Cassaba (kasaba in Turkish) melons are originally from Kırkağaç/Turgutlu of Manisa, Türkiye, where they have been stewarded for generations upon generations. Hence, we will identify them as Kırkağaç-type melons in our catalog.
Kırkağaç-type melons first appeared in American seed catalogs in early 1800’s, and stayed popular until early 19th century. Moreover, the first colored illustration of them first appeared in Aggeler & Musser Seed Co’s 1908 catalog.
