Description

Armut winter squash grows vigorously and yields large, pear-shaped fruits with orange flesh. Some fruits can weigh more than 20 lb. This variety did very well on our farm in West Virginia as well as in North Carolina where our seed stock was grown. A traditional variety we know to have been grown in Northwest Turkey.

Our current seed stock was grown by Chris Smith of The Utopian Seed Project in North Carolina. Photo by Chris Smith.

Packet has min. 25 seeds

Phonetically pronounced:

  • Cucurbita moschata
  • Full sun
  • Planting depth: 1/2-1″
  • Sprouts in 5-10 days
  • Ideal growing temperature: 70-90F
  • Plant spacing: 18-36″
  • Frost hardy: No
  • Growth habit: Vining
  • Growing tips: Direct-seed seeds in compost-rich, fertile and well-drained soil after last frost in spring. Water regularly at flowering stage. Mulch at plant base to retain soil moisture during growth. Watch for squash bugs and vine borers. Vining varieties require a lot of space to crawl. Winter squash thrives in warm weather. Moschata varieties are usually more tolerant to squash vine borers, thanks to their hard, difficult-to-penetrate vines.
