Flavorful, high-yielding tomato variety from West Virginia. Many fruits weigh in 1-2 lb range. Our seed stock came from Jim Wyant, tomato connoisseur of Walton, Indiana. Wyant originally received his seeds from Sharlene Knight of Newton, West Virginia, who had received her seeds from Dennis C. Sutton of Wallback, West Virginia.
Sutton initially gave Knight seeds that were dated to 1975 but they didn’t germinate. The following year, he gave her and her daughter Tiffany Bowers two tomatoes off the vine. They were able to save seeds from the plants they grew and distribute to other gardeners.
Dennis Sutton stated that his mom, Olive Wilson Sutton, told him when her husband died in 1995 that she had grown the tomato for 39 years. She referred to the tomato as a German tomato. After Olive Wilson Sutton’s passing, her family placed a photo of her and her husband holding the tomato, taken in 1982, on their tombstone.
