GROWING NOTES
- Break the bulbs into cloves.
- Plant the cloves growing tip up and up to four weeks prior to the ground freezes in fall, 1-2 inches deep and 6-8 inches apart.
- Garlic loves well-drained soil with a lot of compost/organic matter.
- Mulch heavily, if you have hard winter.
- Hardneck garlic forms scapes in late spring. Snap those scapes to pickle and ferment them, have them cut fresh in salads, mix in omelette and make all sorts of other delicious things.
- 3-4 weeks after snapping the scapes and when the bottom 3-4 leaves on the plants turn brown, bulbs are ready to harvest.
- Let the plants dry with the leaves intact where there is good air circulation. Alternatively, you can hang the stems from a beam in your workshed or barn, if any.
- When the stems are dry, cut two inches above where the stems meet the bulbs.
- Other tips: Store in a cool and dark place with low humidity. Most garlic we sell store incredibly well for 6-9 months, if ideal conditions are in place.
