Garlic Bulbs, Kishlyk Hardneck

Mid-season, purple-striped hardneck garlic with large bulbs that form elongated cloves that have purple wrappers. Plants grow sturdy and strong. Very spicy, robust flavor. Kishlyk is a Turkish word and means for winter.

This variety was originally collected from Uzbekistan wilderness to be brought back to the United States, possibly by the USDA plant expedition team back in 1980’s. It is unclear to us whether the team received proper permissions from the local people to pull the bulbs out of its own ecosystem when they did that. That being said, now this garlic is in wide commercial circulation in the U.S., out of its context within a specific habitat, and it is important to acknowledge the ways in which we can practice seed and plant stewardship better. Our gratitude goes to the Uzbek stewards of this beautiful garlic.
