Frequently Asked Questions

Seed and Product Questions

We are farmers and seed savers. Stock seed for the majority of the varieties in our catalog were grown by us at some point on our farm in West Virginia. We also work with other small farmers across the U.S. who grow seeds for us on a contract basis. We don’t buy seed from wholesale seed companies domestically or internationally.

Not necessarily, unless we run out of stock for a seed variety before the following growing season. If properly stored, many seeds can stay viable for several years. We sell seeds for each variety in our catalog until we find out they lost their viability when we test the seeds for germination. At that point, that variety becomes unavailable in our catalog until either we or another farmer grows the variety again.

Although we would love to Yes to this question, the answer is simply No, and this is also the case for any seed you buy from any seed company. As a small seed company, we rely on feedback from our customers for the performance of the seeds they buy from us to grow in their hardiness zone.

Some of our seeds are known to excel across the board, some are reported to do better in certain regions, and some are reported to do gradually better as they adapt to the local/regional growing conditions.

We are not organically certified. Organic certification is a costly and timely process. When we first founded our seed company, we farmed in the Tampa Bay Region. Then we moved to West Virginia and now we are based in Florida again. Organic certification certifies a farm operation in place and we would need to start over the process every time we move which wouldn’t be financially viable.

Instead, we choose to use environmentally conscious practices, organically-certified products for farming. Some of the farmers who grow seeds for us are either organically-certified or prefer to follow similar practices to ours.

No. We only sell open-pollinated seeds. If you properly isolate your plants against cross-pollination, you can save seeds from all of the plants grown with the seeds you buy from our catalog, to re-plant in future seasons.

No. We do not chemically treat our seeds or sell any seed chemically treated by others.
