My maternal grandfather was born in Şumen (tr. Şumnu), Bulgaria, in the Ottoman Empire era and had to flee to Anatolia during Balkan Wars in early 20th century. I grew up listening the stories my mom told me about the food she ate in her childhood home; food that spoke to the cultural background of my grandfather and my grandmother whose life took her to Syria at one point and who also fled to Anatolia, running from the British army during World War I. Hence, Balkan seeds have a special place in my heart as they connect me to my grandparents.
Vezena Piperka, a Macedonian seed, is one of the most flavorful hot peppers I have grown. At seed maturity, fruit skin develops striations. Fruits have excellent aroma and a well-balanced heat/flesh ratio. This pepper makes some of the best hot pepper sauces I have ever tasted.
Vezena Piperka now has a new home in my field, in our seed room, close to my heart. I will grow it season after season as long as I am able and my journey here as a guest, as a traveler who is passing through and witnessing what need to be witnessed, allows me to keep cultivating Earth.
We sourced our seed directly from the Balkans.
