Half-runner beans have a loyal following in Appalachia. Although stringy, these beans are usually prolific and preferred to be used in making leather britches after removing the strings, which was originally a tradition of Native peoples.
Selected for its tenderness and flavor by the respected seed saver Dr. Bill Best, NT Half-runner is stringless and an overwhelmingly productive bean. Plump pods are tender even when they are full with seeds. Non-tough Half-runner is a multi-purpose bean. It is great as a fresh bean as well as for canning and to make leather britches. Plants need trellising but they won’t stretch as much as some other pole beans do.
