Seed crop 2018
Cherokee Purple is one of the best tasting heirloom purple tomatoes we have ever grown in our field. In our December 2017 blind tomato tasting event, it received the highest scores for flavor and texture both from the food critic of Tampa Bay Times, Laura Reiley and chef Gregory Seymour of Pizzeria Gregario. Seeds of this pre-1890 variety were initially sent to Craig LeHoullier by J. D. Green of Tennessee in 1990 and were commercially introduced in 1993 by Southern Exposure Seed Exchange.
In our Fall/Winter 2017 field, Cherokee Purple outperformed other purple heirloom/open-pollinated varieties for flavor, yield, even ripening and disease tolerance. Plants are shorter than many indeterminate tomatoes, almost showing semi-determinate growth habit. Many fruits weigh around 10-12 oz and ripen to a dark and dusky purple/green color. 75-80 days to maturity.
